Sponsoring

On the road, across the globe, I met some of the friendliest people, some of whom I decided to help a bit.

Two students (7 years and 16 years old)

Sponsored two boys to continue attending school after their father was attacked on a street and could not work. Started the process in late 2023 and continued into 2025.

An artist

Sponsored a young artist to acquire painting material for new projects and to diversify his business expanding into a new industry. I met him on Saturday, the 1 April 2023, and he showed me his country a bit. More about this in the forthcoming book "Dire".

An orphan & a photographer/graphic designer

  • Sponsored an orphaned boy to finish university courses and exams in Kinshasa.
  • Gifted my older Nikon D810 and purchased a new Nikon Z6II and an Apple MacBook Pro for a young photographer and graphic designer to kick off his business. Met on Saturday, 31 August 2019.

A mechanic

Sponsored school fees and government certification costs for a young boy, who wanted to become a professional guide in the national parks, who is now taking travellers to safaris across the country. Met in the Serengeti National Park on Tuesday morning, the 11 September 2018, at an open-air garage.

A security guard

Sponsored driving school for a young gentleman working as a security guard of a hotel in Banguela, who wanted to become a professional driver. There is a chapter about this in "Steep". We met on Saturday, the 28 May 2016.

An orphan & a musician

  • Sponsored education of an orphaned boy for over ten years, a keen footballer with a great sense of humour. We met on Sunday morning, the 27 August 2006. The book "Voodoo" has some more details.
  • In Elmina, on Saturday, the 26 March 2016, I met a musician-come-fitness instructor, whom I helped to acquire a taxi to start a small business in this town with limited opportunities.

A tour agent

Acquired a vehicle for a young father to support his family, and participated in a construction of their family home. I met him on Wednesday morning, the 23 April 2014.

A personal trainer

Sponsored a young lad to build a gym and acquire training equipment to start a new business and to help local boys stay fit, healthy and busy, away from troubles of the street. I bumped into him at the bouncers' station of a club in Stone Town, on Wednesday night, the 30 November 2005. Detailed report in the book "Mist & Dust".

A refugee

Sponsored English classes for a boy smuggled by his mother to The Gambia from war-torn Guinea-Bissau, where they have different official languages. I met him on my first trip to The Gambia in December 2004, and we travelled together to see his country in April 2007. "Wild", "One" and "The Smile" have some content about this.

A teacher

Sponsored university fees of a young monk from Luang Prabang for four years, who wanted to learn about economics, and who eventually became a school teacher in a village where he had grown up. I met him on my first trip to Indochina in January 2004. A few words about the encounter can be found in the book "Imperfect".
